MARSHAL REGGIE THOMAS

Marshal Reggie Thomas’ service to the community began immediately after high school, when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. In 1990, he began his career as a police officer with the Lafayette Police Department. During his time on the force, Reggie served as a Patrol Officer, Narcotics Agent, Training Director, Homicide Detective, and Precinct Commander.

In January 2016, Reggie was appointed Interim Chief of Police for the City of Lafayette. He worked directly with the Mayor and City Council to implement the city’s first Community Relations Committee focused on developing policies to strengthen the communication and trust between the police and members of the community. In addition to his community development work, Reggie also testified before the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies and, with the help of the department’s amazing accreditation team, was able to obtain accreditation for the Lafayette Police Department for the first time in the city’s history.

Following his term as Interim Chief, Reggie remained with the department as the first Deputy Chief of Police in the city’s history. As Deputy Chief of Police, Reggie continued his work in managing the city’s police force, increasing diversity, and implementing policies to reduce domestic violence.

The leadership roles that Reggie has filled came about through his strong belief in training. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2011. Reggie is also a graduate of Leadership Lafayette Class XXXII and of Louisiana Leadership.

Marshal Thomas believes that one of the essential roles of a leader is working with the community you serve and engaging diverse voices to create policies and promote safety, transparency, and fairness.
